Our Projects So Far

We supported the Youth Sport Trust to deliver their award-winning ‘Girls Active’ programme to 10 schools in East London, Leeds and Glasgow in 2021 and 2022. Over 350 girls were empowered to work with their teachers to change their PE curriculum and to take part in sessions run by Sweaty Betty’s network of instructors.

In the US, we partnered with GLSEN to support K-12 schools and make sports and physical activity more inclusive and welcoming for LGBTQ+ young people. In September 2021, we supported the relaunch of GLSEN’s ‘Changing the Game’ programme with new resources and training for staff and pupils, with a particular focus on supporting trans and non-binary pupils.

We’re also supporting Greenhouse Sports, a London-based charity which places coaches in schools to increase participation in sports and increase the number of girls who take part. Together we’re learning lots about how to engage girls in co-curricular activities and trialling new ways to get them involved.

Our Focus For The Future

Girls tell us that they encounter some major barriers to enjoying PE, including that they hate the changing room experience, they wish they could talk to understanding teachers about puberty (especially about periods) and they don’t feel confident or comfortable in their kit.

We’ll work with local and national partners to innovate and pilot new ways to overcome these barriers, turning PE from something girls dread into something they look forward to each week.

We’re also working with partners like Greenhouse Sports to deliver bra workshops to girls across London, talking them through the steps to correctly fit a sports bra as well as explaining and discussing why it’s important to wear one.

In 2024, we’re looking to add educational elements such as Period Workshops into schools to get girls talking about their periods, and overcoming the barriers they face to participating in PE.

“Changing room dramas are the worst. I feel like it’s really judge-y!”

“The workshop was interesting. I’ve learnt loads about sports bras and can’t wait to wear mine for PE.”
