Supporting Black and South Asian Heritage Girls With Sporting Equals

We have a major partnership with Sporting Equals, a charity dedicated to promoting ethnic diversity across sport and physical activity. We’ve worked with them on their ‘Girls Powered’ project in Greater Manchester since 2021, supporting 10 grassroots community organisations for Black and South Asian heritage girls. So far we’ve helped over 250 girls take part in hundreds of weekly activity sessions, including everything from football and cricket to dance and in-line skating. The project has also supported several women and girls to gain instructor qualifications to ensure the activities can be run sustainably.

The next phase of the project will support another 10 organisations to run new activities for girls, as well as empowering many more women and girls to become leaders and instructors. Running until the end of 2023, the project will create a lasting network of community groups in Greater Manchester who can collaborate with each other, and the local authorities and sports organisations, to let girls fall in love with movement. We aim to use what we learn to help other organisations support Black and South Asian heritage girls to get moving too.

Girls Leading The Way With ‘Girls On The Pitch’

‘Girls on the Pitch’ is a virtual community event where girls from across the country pitch for funding to help their peers get active. The judges include girls from our brilliant Girls Panel and Sweaty Betty staff. So far we’ve supported 14 groups from Stoke to Stirling to run activities including rock-climbing, basketball and yoga.

Our ‘Girls on the Pitch’ event is a fantastic opportunity for young girls to develop public speaking skills and an entrepreneurial spirit in a supportive, exciting and girl-focused environment. The events are normally held in April and October of each year. If you’re interested in applying for the next one, please email sbfapplications@sweatybetty.com

“It was empowering to wear the funders’ hat and be judges for ‘Girls on the Pitch’. We loved our time in London!”

Supporting Innovators

We support a broad range of projects that empower girls to get active in their communities through our Innovation Fund, usually up to a value of £20,000. Current and previous projects include:

Milk Honey Bees

Female led, expressive safe space that aims to allow young women to feel empowered and heal from their experiences.

Black Girls Hike

Providing a safe space for women to explore the outdoors, we partner with Black Girls Hike to host fun and inclusive hikes for teenage girls that help them reconnect to nature.

Make Space For Girls

Campaigning for parks & public spaces to be designed with teenage girls in mind, we’re collaborating on their ‘Park Watch’ programme and sharing insight from our own Girls Panel.

Muslimah Sports Association

Helping women to play sports without compromising their religious or cultural beliefs, we’re working together to empower girls from South Asian backgrounds to get moving.

Access Sport

Equipping community clubs, organisations and volunteers to provide inclusive programmes, we’re supporting Access Sport to transform the lives of underserved young people.

“The programme really helped me, more than I thought it would. Even though I didn’t want to do it, I’m so glad I did.”
